New This Week: Improvements to Date Range Selection

April 5, 2018 By Linda Robertson

We have recently made some improvements to how PetroDE handles data layers with a defined Default Date column. This much anticipated change clarifies how Default Date works and simplifies date selection in both Super Search and Advanced Search.

The Default Date column is used in the date range selection menu found underneath the AOI drawing tools.

How it Works

Super Search

The date range selection menu is now only available if a default date column has been specified for the layer being searched (e.g. IHS Wells or IHS Production). For layers without a defined default date column, there is no longer a date range selection menu available, thus avoiding confusion.

Advanced Search

We moved the date range selection menu to the Column drop-down menu. It is called Default Date. This new column is backwards compatible with Saved Views that were saved prior to this improvement. To avoid confusion when sharing these views, it is advisable to update the view to search on the named date column instead of on Default Date.

If a search is started in Super Search and then Advanced Search is selected, the date selected in Super Search will carry over as a Default Date search term in Advanced Search, as shown below.

Nulls

Nulls are no longer included in date range searches; for example: 01/01/2015-01/01/2017, Past Year, Past Six Months, etc. Selecting Is Null will return only nulls. Selecting All Time will return all points, including points that are null in the default date column.

Previously Saved Views

Views saved before this improvement will no longer include the wells that were null. For example, for a saved view containing a search of IHS wells, the saved view will no longer include wells that are null in permit date, spud date, and completion date. In Advanced Search, a previously saved view includes a search term for Default Date and the date range that was specified when the view was saved.

IHS Well Data Default Date Column: Most recent date from either Completion Date, Spud Date, or Permit Date.

IHS Production Data Default Date Column: First Prod Date

User Uploaded Layer Default Date Column: Specified in the Create Layer Wizard upon upload for layers containing date columns. If the default date is set to none, no date range selection menu will appear in Super Search and no Default Date column option will appear in Advanced Search.

How to Define a Default Date Column

Define your Default Date Column when uploading a layer using the Create Layer Wizard (Select Create Layer under the Create tab.) Specify the desired column when asked by the wizard. This appears after you select the searchable columns, text balloon columns, and label column.

The column selected is what is used in the date range selection menu in Super Search, or in the Default Date column in Advanced Search. If the Default Date is set to None, no date range selection menu will appear in Super Search and no Default Date column option will appear in Advanced Search.
