Craig Cormany is a Senior Geologist at Samson Energy. Like many of us, he’s weathered industry storms and adjusted accordingly.
Approximately seven months ago, Craig was introduced to PetroDE’s cutting-edge technology. He quickly adopted the tool as a regular part of his workflow and reduced time spent researching and analyzing oilfield data literally by days. “It used to take two to three weeks to complete a thorough analysis and I’d have to deploy an entire team to do it,” Craig shared. “Now I can have a thorough analysis in a just a week or less.” Craig commented that his geo-technician was able to save half her time by using PetroDE®.
How exactly has Craig’s workflow changed? In the past he’d enlist multiple resources using various databases along with TIBCO® Spotfire®. He would blindly pick an area and make generalized maps based on water, pressure, GOR, etc. He’d pass along this information to his team who would then build maps and perform additional research on areas that might be of interest. They’d have multiple meetings along the way to report on their individual progress and prioritize next steps. It took a lot of time, involved many steps, and many disciplines as well.
With PetroDE, however, this industry-standard process is flipped on its head. “Now, I can do my scouting first. This is huge. I can scout and analyze FIRST.” By having access to the various databases all under the same umbrella, Craig saves a lot of time putting together disparate data sets for subsequent analysis. He can layer heat maps and bubble maps and quickly identify areas of interest. “It’s just as important to know why things don’t work as why they do,” Craig says. The faster he can learn what isn’t working, the faster he can move past unqualified projects and move on to the ones that support the company’s success.
A feature that Craig finds particularly useful are the heat maps on 90 day production and on GOR. Once these maps are easily created using a layering technique, he further refines down to a specific formation where he can make water production maps and see where the geo-pressure might be. “PetroDE is a fast screening tool that I use to vet deals and verify accuracy.” He is able to look at others’ acreage positions and evaluate operators’ performance down to the granularity of individual wells.
“It’s an ultrafast high level prospecting tool that can be used to discern the most productive areas in resource plays.” When asked what Craig would say to someone who is considering PetroDE, Craig perked up and said, “Actually, you know what? I don’t want other people to know about this! It’s a competitive advantage. It definitely offers a first mover advantage to information and data.” We hope Craig won’t be disappointed when he’s unable to keep the secret all to himself.
